Dr.
Samrina Hashmi
speaks about infertility
KARACHI: Dr. Samrina Hashmi
MRCOG Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who is also General
Secretary of PMA Karachi delivered a lecture on Sub-fertility- basic
investigations and how to proceed at Dr. Essa Laboratory and Diagnostic
Centre recently. Speaking at the occasion she said that a child is one of
the most beautiful gifts of God. It is very distressing for women when she
does not get pregnant.
She pointed out that in half
of all cases of infertile couples, it is the man who is infertile, yet in
our society, only women face tragedies when a couple does not produce a
child even after two years into the marriage. There are however, various
basic problems, which the women themselves, or their parents, do not share
with the husband, which are an important factor in the woman’s inability to
have a child.
A couple should seek medical
advice, if they do not get pregnant after one year of marriage and living
together. If the wife is more then 30 years of age they should approach
after six months of trying, as increasing female age has profound effects on
success rate of treatments cycles. A woman over thirty years has much lower
chances of becoming pregnant and should be referred for assisted
reproduction, or to specialized centers in case she has failed to have a
child after two years of the marriage, Dr. Samrina Hashmi stated.
As far as the man is
concerned it is important that doctors ask the husband to get a SEMEN
ANALYSIS report since the true cause of infertility can never be established
without taking both partner on board. The wife and husband should go
together, to see the expert. The couple is interviewed in detail about their
reproductive and health history to identify possible reasons for the causes
of their infertility.
She concluded her
presentation by stating that infertility is a serious problem which must be
dealt with sympathy and expertise. Consulting time as per requirement should
be given in proper setting. Ovulation induction and ART are solution for
many infertile couples. Optimal results depend upon experience and judgment
of clinician and sound knowledge and understanding of reproductive
endocrinology. Male partner should be checked first and if needed both
should be treated. Proper selection of patient and choice of drugs offer
rewarding results. However, the last option is of adoption. (PR)
