CPSP Regional Center
established at Quetta
Balochistan Govt. provided 28 thousand sq. feet
land while CPSP council sanctioned 15 million
rupees for this project

From our correspondent

QUETTA: College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan has at last established its Regional Center at Quetta in Balochistan which was formally inaugurated by the CPSP President Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry on August 8th 2008. This is the 13th regional center of the CPSP established in different parts of the country. It may be mentioned here that Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffer a fellow of the college who has served as Councilor for many years and is currently Senior Vice President has been working on this project for the last many years. Fellows of this most backward province of the country felt neglected. During the first meeting of this newly elected Council of CPSP Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffar requested them to sanction the necessary funds to which the council members agreed and immediately approved fifteen million rupees. Earlier he had acquired 28 thousand sq. feet land from the Government of Balochistan for this center about four years ago.

Construction work on this regional center started on April 20th 2007 and the building was completed on April 20th 2008 in a record one year’s time. It is fully equipped and has the following facilities:

  1. Library for eighty students.
  2. One computer workshop with 15 computers.
  3. Information Technology Dept.
  4. Seminar and Workshop Hall.
  5. Regional Director Office
  6. Secretary’s office.
  7. One kitchen.
  8. Office for the staff.
  9. Internet facilities
  10. Facilities for video conferencing.

Other facilities made available include a mosque, guest house for workshop facilitators with two big lush green lawns.

Actually it was in 1992 when Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffer requested the then President of CPSP late Prof. M. Hayat Zafar to sanction a regional office at Civil Hospital Quetta besides allowing to hold Theory examination at Quetta for MCPS Part-I and II. However, Prof. Hayat Zafar was a bit reluctant since at that time only ten students  appeared in Part-I examination. He was informed that due to peculiar circumstances and financial hardships, it is extremely difficult for the postgraduates from this province to travel to Karachi for Theory and then Viva Exam. He was eventually receptive to the idea and Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffer was able to produce one hundred fifty Fellows and fifty eight MCPS in different specialties working from a small room. Over the years the number of postgraduates appearing in different exams of CPSP from Balochistan has increased to six hundred every year.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the regional center, Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffer said that he started this journey in 1992 and today I feel happy to see that CPSP has helped me in establishing this beautiful regional center for the Fellows and postgraduates of CPSP in the province of Balochistan.

Prof. Abdullah Jan Jaffer, it may be recalled was one of the senior most surgeons in Balochistan who served at Bolan Medical College and Sandeman Civil Hospital Quetta for almost thirty six years. He never indulged in private practice and concentrated fully working for the CPSP
