is being increased from 500 to 1100-beds

LAHORE: Sometime ago the Government of Punjab decided to establish four new medical colleges in the province and the city of Sialkot was selected as one of the districts for this purpose. Hence Sialkot Medical College was set up on January 10th 2011. Later this college has been renamed in memory of late eminent parliamentarian Khawaja Muhammad Safdar and it became Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medial College. Prof. Tanvir Ali Khan Prof. of Physiology was the named as founder Principal who worked hard to ensure that this ambitious project gets going. During his tenure, PM&DC as well as UHS teams visited the college and approved it.

After his retirement Prof. Dr. Shah Zaman Latif, Professor of Biochemistry, took over the charge of Acting Principal on 07-02-2012. He also worked hard for the progress of college. During his tenure the government of the Punjab declared Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot as an Autonomous Body. An Administrative Committee was also constituted headed by Principal, Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College. He was replaced by Prof. Dr. Nosheen Omar, Professor of Anatomy on July 13th 2013. She was very enthusiastic and took steps to bring drastic changes in Emergency and Trauma center and worked hard to provide free medicine and other facilities to the patients.
She also tried hard to ensure that the dialysis unit of Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital, starts functioning. The stone-laying ceremony of the Building of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot was also held during her tenure. In order to fulfill the shortage of faculty and administrative staff, she got various posts sanctioned and advertised them, did complete working for the induction of professors, associate Professors, assistant professors, librarian etc. and put them before the meeting of the Special Selection Board. She had made the plans to affiliate Social Security Hospital with Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot. All the documentation between the two institutions had been made but before the final decision, she was transferred from KMS Medical College to Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore on November 30th 2012. Thereafter, the Punjab Government appointed Prof. Dr. Zafar Ali Chaudhry, Professor of Surgery, as new Principal of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot who assumed this responsibility on December 1st 2012. He is very enthusiastic, having the qualities of a great leader. He institutionalized the existing manpower and other material resources to make it possible that Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot can stand on firm footing, patients can enjoy the best possible facilities in OPD, Indoor wards and Emergency etc.

First time in the history of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, White Coat Ceremony was organized to honour the 1st year students and their parents on their induction as Medical Students on December 18th 2012. COS – Clinical Orientation Sessions of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College Sialkot have been started for the first time and the Students of new 2nd year were taken to the following wards of the hospital.

• ENT Ward
• Neurosurgery Ward
• Gynaecology Ward
• Ophthalmology Ward
• Surgery Ward
• Paediatrics Ward

The idea was to orientate them with the clinical side of Medical College and Hospital, so that they are mentally prepared to handle patients with utmost care and gentleness. They were instructed about bedside manners, counseling of the patients and the treatment process. They were also introduced to Paramedical Staff and Nurses. These programmes will be continued for other classes in future.
Mentorship Programme has been launched by the Principal who also delivered the first lecture in this regard on “Medical Professionalism”. Mentorship Lectures are conducted on every Saturday on regular basis. To inculcate the spirit of literature Mehfil-e-Adab was organized in which renowned poets of Sialkot participated. Weekly Clinical Pathological Conference is being organized regularly and till now more than 20 Clinical Pathological Conferences have been conducted. Basic Life Saving Training Programme is being organized by the institution with Collaboration of Dr. Sohail Tufail, Cardiologist. So far more than sixty 3rd year Students of KMS Medical College have successfully completed their BLS Training and got Certificates.
On 22nd April, 2013 a Fikri Nishist was arranged to commemorate the death anniversary of Great National Poet of Pakistan in which eminent personalities of Sialkot participated. Prof. Dr. Zafar Ali Chaudhry along with the Students of KMS Medical College, Sialkot also visited the birth place of Allama Iqbal .Principal, KMS Medical College has personally conducted one to one meeting with each student to assess his academic performance and to guide them in their studies.
Prof. Dr. Zafar Ali Ch. arranged a meeting of the special selection board on December 21st 2012 and inducted Seventeen new demonstrators to fulfill the shortage of the faculty. A meeting of the Selection Board of Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College was held at Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore for the selection of Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant professor of different specialties. A workshop on medical education and evaluation methods was organized with collaboration of university of health sciences Lahore.
Government Sardar Begum Hospital is also being reorganized to ensure that the basic facilities necessary for the treatment of patients are made available. All kind of tests, X-Rays, Ultrasound, lifesaving drugs and medicines etc. are provided on economical pries to the patients. In emergency all kind of tests and medicine are provided free.
Upgradation of the existing hospital from five hundred beds to eleven hundred beds has been undertaken and pace of construction of the new building is being constantly monitored to ensure its timely completion.
