PIMA Seminar on Career planning for FMGs
Fresh Medical Graduates must decide about their future career during internship or even earlier
 

KARACHI: Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) Karachi organized a Career Guidance Seminar for Fresh Medical Graduates (FMGs) at Karachi recently. It was largely attended by graduates from various medical colleges. The objective was to provide them an opportunity to get acquainted with the current opportunities in post graduation and related fields. Prof. Ejaz Ahmed Vohra an eminent Physician of the country along with Dr. Sohail Akhtar presided.

BIRMINGHAM (UK): Workshops and presentations on schizophrenia, Bipolar Mania, Efficacy and tolerability in the treatment with antipsychotics, Current perspectives in biological therapies for depression, Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia besides special sessions, workshops on management competencies, examination techniques and child psychiatry were the salient features of the 8th annual conference organized by Midland Psychiatric Research Group held here from June 27-28th 2008.

60-Bed Children Complex and Resource Center set up at Vehari through public-private partnership
 

VEHARI: Constraint of resources remains a constant problem in the health sector and government alone cannot afford to provide healthcare to the entire population. However, numerous projects are functioning in the country under the public-private partnership supplementing government efforts. The District of Vehari has also joined this list as through the dedicated and devoted efforts of a few healthcare professionals, a 60-Bed Children Complex has been constructed adjacent to the 125-bed District Headquarters Hospital.

Headache and Back Pain conference at Karachi from October 10-11th 2008
 

KARACHI:  The First National Conference on Headache and Back Pain is being organized at Karachi from October 10-11th 2008. Dr. S. A. Siddiqui consultant neurosurgeon is the chairman of the organizing committee. The conference is being held in collaboration with a number of related specialty organizations. Early diagnosis and proper management of these disorders is a problem, hence this conference will provide an opportunity to the participants to update themselves on various diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities.

BIDE organizes CME on Diabetes management and Foot Care
 

KARACHI: A three day comprehensive Continuing Medical Education programme on diabetes was conducted at Baqai Institute of Diabetology & Endocrinology, Karachi, under the auspices of National Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Programme, Pakistan from June 23-25th 2008.  It was very well attended by general practitioners. Faculty members from BIDE made presentations on different aspects and discussed all the important and basic aspects of diabetes management.

Regular use of low dose Aspirin in
acute coronary syndrome reduces
risk of acute MI and death by 50% -

VEHARI: All Acute Myocardial Infarction patients should be advised to take one tablet of 325mg of Aspirin immediately followed by 150mg tablets for three months and then 75mg of Aspirin enteric coated tablets for indefinitely. This will reduce the risk of subsequent acute MI and death by almost 50%. This was stated by Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary a noted consultant physician and President of Pakistan Aspirin Foundation. He was delivering a lecture on “ Aspirin- the Wonder Drug” at a seminar on Medical Uses of Aspirin organized by Pakistan Aspirin Foundation in collaboration with Pakistan Medical Association Vehari Branch which was sponsored by Atco Laboratories.

PPP lead coalition government fails to take any positive steps in health sector
 

ISLAMABAD: No one had expected that the economic mess which the Shaukat Aziz government under the patronage of General Pervez Musharraf had created will be resolved by the PPP lead coalition government within three months but the people did expect the democratic government to be at least sensitive to their feelings. Rapid tests for drug-resistant TB being made available in developing countries
 

GENEVA: People in low-resource countries who are suffering from multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) will get a faster diagnosis -- in two days, not the standard two to three months -- and appropriate treatment thanks to two new initiatives unveiled recently by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Stop TB Partnership, UNITAID and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND).
