Rehabilitation of Flood Affectees
HANDS to build one thousand model villages in
three years-Prof. A. G. Billoo

KARACHI: Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS) will build one thousand model villages in the province of Sindh during the next three years to rehabilitate the flood affectees. This NGO whose mission is Healthy Educated Prosperous Pakistan spent about six hundred fifty million rupees during 2010 in health and education sectors. This was stated by Prof. A. G.Billoo an eminent paediatrician of the country and Patron of HANDS. He was speaking at a dinner meeting organized by PPMA recently.
HANDS Prof. Billoo said has a special focus on rural areas and it is benefitting thirteen million people in twenty four districts of Pakistan of which twenty are in Sindh province. As a policy we always ensure that we have a local partner before staring our work in any area. We have a fourteen member Board of Governors of HANDS, we employee 1674 full time staff and have 109721 village based volunteers. Currently we are pursuing two hundred eighty seven projects in health sector, fifteen in education and seventeen in poverty alleviation programme. A documentary Wild Water highlighting the rescue and relief efforts of HANDS for flood affectees was also shown to the participants.
Dr. Tanveer Chief Executive of HANDS speaking at the occasion said that we are planning rehabilitation of fifty thousand families. We will repair schools and health facilities and ensure sustainability of our interventions. We have identified the needs of different areas and now community based organizations are being established. Giving further details of the rehabilitation project he said that a one unit Mud house will cost sixty seven thousand rupees while a cement house will cost one lac ten thousand rupees. We have already built six hundred cement houses in Thatta. We have received funding to refurbish one thousand schools in the rural areas and all our activities are undertaken through funds which are generated from donations, grants from local and foreign institutons including UNICEF and WHO, USAID etc. Prof. Billoo clarified that HANDS will welcome any kind of partnership may it be in the shape of wisdom from the eminent personalities from the Pharma industry present today or cash and kind. Our mission is to provide high quality health for people of Pakistan. Pharma industry in Pakistan, Prof. Billoo said has made tremendous progress and we are all happy and delighted at their progress and achievements.
Earlier Mr. Haroon Qasim Chairman PPMA in his welcome address said that PPMA is aware of its corporate social responsibilities. Some of our members are already helping HANDS in their individual capacity. We will discuss this issue and would like to help HANDS in its efforts to help the poor. Pharma industry, he said has always come up to the expectations of the Nation and we have always ensured availability of quality drugs at affordable prices. There was no shortage of drugs even during floods. The meeting was very well attended by chief executives and senior representatives of various pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Kaiser Waheed Sheikh also briefly addressed the participants and talked about the problems faced by the Pharma trade and industry
