KARACHI: Members of the Senate Committee on Health accompanied by
Federal Health Secretary Mr. Khashnood Akhtar Lashari and DG Health
Prof. Rashid Jooma recently visited the College of Physicians and
Surgeons Pakistan in Karachi. According to the reports they were very
much impressed with the impressive neat and clean magnificent campus and
functioning of the CPSP. Members of the committee were given a briefing
on the structure of the CPSP, its historical background and its
functioning by Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry President of CPSP.
In the briefing President CDPSP informed the Senate Health Committee
members how with a minimum budget generated from Fees of postgraduates
and Workshops the college was trying to perform its functions of
teaching, training and conducting the exams for the postgraduates.
Despite inflation, the college, he said, has not increased the
examination fees nor the fees of various workshops for trainees and
supervisors. CPSP Campus has the state of the art facilities, a new
lecture hall is also being built which will be equipped with latest
audiovisual equipment. The main Burki auditorium is also being
renovated.
The college has established regional centers all over the country and
four of these regional centers are also linked with the main campus with
facilities of video conferencing. This facility is used to organize
various lectures and training workshops. Through the video link the
committee members were shown the campus at Quetta, Lahore, Peshawar and
Islamabad. Similar facilities, Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry said will be
made available at other regional centers in the days to come. Prof.
Zarullah Chaudhry also gave the visiting team details of the induction
of postgraduate trainees, the number of accredited supervisors, and
accredited training institutions all over the country and overseas and
how it has tried to maintain its standard and quality of training.
Committee members, the CPSP President said are always welcome to visit
any of its centers even without any prior information to see its
functioning. The College Council, he said was doing its best to maintain
discipline, improve and expand the existing training facilities
including library facilities. Memorandum of Understanding have been
signed with many countries in the Gulf including Saudi Arabia as well as
the Royal Colleges of UK. FCPS degree awarded by the CPSP now enjoys
international recognition which is a matter of great pride of all of us,
he added.
The Senate Health Committee members took keen interest in the
functioning of the CPSP and felt that efforts should be made to improve
the functioning of the healthcare facilities, medical institutions in
the public sector as well. They were surprised to note that CPSP at
present does not have any representation in the PM&DC despite the fact
that it was doing a commendable job in the field of postgraduate medical
education.
Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan Member of Senate Health Committee talking to
Pulse International confirmed that members of the committee were
immensely impressed with the functioning of the College of Physicians
and Surgeons Pakistan. After a long time we had the pleasure of visiting
a medical institution which has certain rules which are also followed
and implemented. CPSP enjoys good image and credibility while our
experience while visiting some other medical institutions was not good,
he remarked. |
