Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis

KARACHI: Beauty parlors and saloon are another source of hepatitis spread besides Pricking habit of IV infusion bottles and unnecessary use of blood products, re-used syringes in Pakistan. Instruments used by the dental surgeons and others doing interventional procedures, if not properly sterilized can also spread Hepatitis infection.. This was stated by Dr. Razia Husain, Professor and Head Department of Anesthesiology, Hamdard University Hospital Karachi while performing Otsuka monthly lucky draw at Otsuka Head Office on February 18th, 2010. Otsuka Pakistan it may be mentioned here is running an awareness campaign regarding prevention of hepatitis which is spreading very rapidly in our country.

Dr. Razia Hussain further said that awareness and educational programmes for paramedics and nurses are very important because these people are the back bone of every health care facility. If they are properly trained to follow standard operating procedures lot of complications could be avoided. Efforts should also be made to educate GP’ to stop unethical practices. Lot of GP’s especially those practicing in rural and peripheral areas should be educated to stop re-use of syringes which is a very common practice. Instruments used in OPD's must be properly sterilized because. Hepatitis is increasing very rapidly in our country and almost 35 to 40 % patients examined at Surgical Department are Hepatitis B or C carrier. Ethical practice and emphasis on prevention of the diseases are important to prevent hepatitis and other communicable diseases, she added.

At Hamdard University, Dr. Razia stated that workshops are being organized to educate medical students, nurses, RMO’s, personnel working in operation theaters and other department where IV Cannulation, proper handling of equipment, IV bottles, and equipment in OT, are taught she added. She commended the services of Otsuka Pakistan in creating awareness against Hepatitis and arranging informative programme for the healthcare professionals.
