KARACHI: College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has emerged as one of the most credible postgraduate medical institution in the Muslim World. This was stated by Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry President of CPSP while delivering late Prof. Manzar Salim Memorial Lecture in the inaugural session during SURGICON 2010 organized by Society of Surgeons of Pakistan at Karachi on January 16th and January 17th 2010. The title of his presentation was Structured Training Programme for Trainees. He also paid rich tributes to late Prof. Manzar Salim terming him as confident, research minded, clear headed, the one with great vision. He was conscious of merit and this young man with smiling face had made a mark even in his early years.
Speaking about the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry said that we have accomplished a lot to achieve and retain academic credibility which is evident from the fact that almost 90-95% of specialists in Pakistan in different disciplines of medicine are either Fellows or Members of CPSP. We have earned international credibility by signing Memorandum of Understanding with clear objectives with Royal Colleges in UK, with Government of Kuwait, Saudi Health Board, with Malaysia while similar arrangements are in progress with many other medical institutions overseas.
Now the CPSP has initiated structured Residency Training Programme which is matching with international residency training programme. Intermediate Module exam has now been made mandatory for all postgraduates. Previously there used to be a very high failure rate. Now this IM Exam enables the postgraduates to assess themselves. Currently there are over twelve hundred units recognized for training all over the country. CPSP has so far recognized one hundred thirty institutions within the country and ninety overseas while the number of accredited supervisors is two thousand sixty nine. Forty instructors have been trained for ATLS while sixty have been trained in ACLS. Now only twice a year induction is allowed in residency training programme. Curriculum has been revised and updated. We have also ensured reliable monitoring besides ensuring transparent, unbiased candidate assessment. Last year in 2009 as many as seventeen hundred candidates appeared in the FCPS-II examinations. Now we have introduced e Log book which has been provided to 4700 postgraduates. Nineteen hundred fifty trainees have been given access on the net while video teleconferencing link has been established with all the regional centers in Pakistan. CPSP, Prof. Zafrullah Chaudhry further stated is a democratic institution which always welcomes suggestions and constructive criticism which helps us to further improve our functioning.
Earlier Prof. Tariq Mahmood President of the Society of Surgeons of Pakistan, Karachi Chapter in his welcome address stated that now when the doors for our postgraduates as well as specialists have been almost shut overseas, holding such conferences provides a forum to keep ourselves abreast with latest developments in surgery. He emphasized the importance of continuous struggle to learn new techniques in surgery. During this conference, we have had three eminent consultants from UK i.e. Dr. Eftikhar Yousuf, Dr. Ameer and Dr. Ijaz Jabbar who have conducted pre-conference workshops. Over two hundred fifty surgeons participated in these workshops which had lively interactive discussion. The programme also includes live surgery for NOTES and Robotic Surgery through televideo conferencing from Singapore.
Prof. Shafiqur Rehman Chairman of the scientific committee gave details of the scientific programme and thanked the overseas speakers, facilitators for the workshops besides the pharma industry for their support to make the conference a success. Prof. Saleem the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee also addressed the meeting, paid tributes to late Prof. Manzar Salim and highlighted the contents of pre-conference workshops. Sindh Health Minister Dr. Sagheer Ahmad was the Chief Guest at the occasion while another Sindh Minister Mr. Jam Daher was also present. Both of them briefly spoke at the occasion. Later shields were presented to the guests and organizers..
